The Health Innovation Via Engineering (HIVE) Lab at NUI Galway, was established in 2019. It aims to deliver novel health solutions through interdisciplinary collaboration. It is led by Professor Derek O’Keeffe, a dual trained Physician/Engineer whose research work encompasses the domains of Digital Health, AI and Robotics. It recently launched the world’s first delivery of insulin by drone (@DiabetesDrone), as well as a novel COVID19 PPE sourcing website for frontline workers, www.CovidMedSupply.org, and a COVID19 symptom tracker, www.MyCovidSymptoms.ie. HIVE Lab collaborators involved with developing this innovative digital health solution include: Mark Cahill, Grainne Conefrey, Dr. Kevin Johnson, Dr. Spyridoula Maraka, Conor McGuire, Garry McNulty, and Jerico Pingul.
This is not a digital contact tracing app, it is a free bluetooth proximity detector. No personal or location data is used by us. It uses publicly available bluetooth signals to function. You consent to using the SPACER App by voluntary downloading and installation of the software (Opt-In). Your phone software contract details is between you and either Apple (iOS) App store or Google (Play store).
This is not a medical device, nor a highly accurate measuring system, Measurement accuracy is based on Bluetooth Technology limitations. There may be times when the software does not work correctly due to environmental or device issues. This software does not work on all phone models or operating systems.
It is meant as a software program to provide a digital nudge / reminder if you are in proximity to another bluetooth device (e.g. phone) for >1 minute, < 2 metres. However due to the technological premise there may times where false positives (alarms) occur when other bluetooth devices (e.g. speakers) are nearby.
In summary, a common sense approach should be taken in using this SPACER App and its use should be in the spirit of its humanitarian development to help all of us during this global health emergency COVID19 pandemic.
